Getting Started with Sense/Stage

You want to start working on a wireless sensing project and you’ve got some Sense/Stage hardware. This guide is intended to help you get familiar enough with the system to begin getting data into your computer from the various wireless nodes (we call them MiniBees) in your network.

To start with, you should make sure you have all the hardware necessary to get started. If you bought a starter kit then you should already have everything. Although it’s important you be able to identify the different pieces of hardware, because we will be referencing them in later steps of the guide.

Once you have identified all the hardware and are sure you have a complete setup, we’ll go into how to install the Sense/Stage communications software (we call it pydon). This is a small program written in the python programming language that will translate all the incoming data from your network of sensors into Open Sound Control (OSC) messages that are much easier to work with.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to know python to use Sense/Stage. Although you will need to know how to run a program from the command line.

If you don’t know what OSC is, you may want to briefly read up on it.

Sense/Stage is designed to communicate with and control other pieces of software, and the protocol by which it does this communication is OSC. Nearly all creative coding environments and audio/visual software have some way of receiving OSC data.
